Argentina issues storm and snow alerts for several provinces

A yellow alert for Monday covers Formosa and Misiones for thunderstorms, while mountain areas of San Juan and Mendoza are forecast to receive snow.

Argentina’s National Meteorological Service expects rain of varying intensity in Formosa and Misiones, locally heavy, with possible hail, frequent thunderstorms and strong gusts. Rainfall is forecast at 20–50 millimetres, with higher totals possible in isolated areas.

Between 20 and 40 centimetres of snow are expected in the mountain areas of San Juan and Mendoza. Lower elevations may see rain or a rain-snow mix. The service advised limiting outdoor activity and travel, clearing drains, securing objects that could be blown away and staying away from doors and windows during storms. Vehicles should be prepared for snow and ice. Residents were also advised to ventilate homes and cars to prevent carbon monoxide buildup.

For the Buenos Aires metropolitan area, Monday’s forecast calls for partly cloudy skies, winds of up to 35 kilometres per hour and temperatures of 13–23 degrees, with no rain expected. Tuesday should be cloudy and dry, with temperatures of 13–21 degrees. Buenos Aires province is forecast to reach 20 degrees.
