Tyson Bagent will make his second consecutive start when the Chicago Bears meet the Green Bay Packers in Week 5. Caleb Williams continues to recover from a hamstring strain.
Coach Ben Johnson told ESPN Chicago that Bagent “will be the guy” against the Packers. He helped Chicago beat the New York Jets 23–12 on Sunday. Williams, who strained his hamstring in the Week 2 loss to Minnesota, is set to miss at least his third straight game.
The Bears have won two consecutive games without Williams. Bagent was in the NFL’s concussion protocol for most of Week 3, so Casey Keenum started the first game without the injured quarterback against Philadelphia.
Against the Jets, Bagent completed 25 of 34 passes for 268 yards and threw one interception. He did not score a touchdown. Running back Kyle Monangai scored twice on the ground. Johnson called the performance mixed but praised Bagent’s control of the offense and the team’s tempo.
Bagent signed a two-year, $10 million contract extension in the offseason. Williams’ recovery is expected to take three to four weeks. If he misses the full period, he would also sit out the Week 6 game against Atlanta. A possible return would come against New England in Week 7.
