The Committee to Protect Journalists called for a transparent investigation after at least four reporters were injured on campus.
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) called for a swift and transparent investigation into an attack on journalists at Bangladesh’s University of Rajshahi and urged authorities to hold those responsible to account. Local reports said at least four reporters were injured while covering an incident near a student dormitory on the evening of 4 October.
The journalists worked for The Daily Star, Samakal, bdnews24.com and Agamir Shomoy. All four were taken to hospital. At least 10 people were reported injured overall. Activists from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s student wing were accused, but the allegations have not been established in court.
CPJ said the university administration filed a police case on 5 October against unidentified people despite reports that video footage could help identify the attackers. Prothom Alo reported that seven people were identified from footage.
After the incident, three activists were expelled from the student organisation and six others received notices seeking explanations. The university removed the provost of the dormitory and formed an inquiry committee. CPJ urged the government to ensure journalists can work safely on university campuses.
