Damaged beech near Sanssouci’s Great Fountain to be removed

Work in Sanssouci Park begins on October 7. The palace and gardens foundation cited visitor safety and outlined plans to restore the historic planting scheme.

On Wednesday, the foundation’s garden service will remove the last of four copper beeches by the Great Fountain, south of Sanssouci Palace in Potsdam. The tree was planted in the mid-19th century at the direction of garden director Peter Joseph Lenné.

The beech is about 30 metres tall, with a crown roughly 20 metres wide. The foundation said it is badly damaged and dying, and fungal decay in the roots means its stability can no longer be guaranteed. Work is expected to take three to four days. After the roots are removed, some soil will be replaced, and several trees are planned for planting in spring 2027. Paths between the Great Fountain and the Eastern Lustgarten will be closed during the work.
