According to the Navy note, Crosetto gave the indications to the top levels of the Defense Ministry, asking them to act in full coordination. The plan is to be aimed at ensuring free transit through Bab el-Mandeb for national-interest vessels that intend to traverse the strait.
The minister also asked officials to verify whether the current legal framework would allow, if necessary, Italian armed forces capabilities already present in the area and currently employed in other operations to be brought under national command.
If that is not possible under existing rules, the note said, the alternative would be a new and specific authorization from Parliament.
Crosetto's request also takes into account decisions already adopted by some allied and partner countries, the Navy said.
