Kyle Delaney, 25, taught seventh-grade social studies at Gonzales Middle School. The Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office said two men were found with gunshot wounds Tuesday afternoon in Donaldsonville, about 35 miles south of Baton Rouge. One of the victims had been hit several times. The victims were not identified.
According to the sheriff’s office, detectives learned that Delaney arrived at the victims’ location, exited his vehicle and fired multiple shots in their direction before fleeing the scene. The department did not give a motive.
Police tracked Delaney that night to a residence in Gonzales, about 17 miles north of Donaldsonville, and took him into custody. He is charged with two counts of attempted second-degree murder, illegal use of weapons and criminal damage to property. Court records show he was still in jail Thursday awaiting arraignment.
Delaney was honored as the 2024-2025 New Teacher of the Year at Gonzales Middle School, according to the school’s website. Ascension Public Schools said Wednesday that he is no longer employed by the district. A district spokesperson said the matter is an active law enforcement matter and that questions about the incident, arrest or criminal charges should be directed to the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office, adding that the district could not comment further on personnel matters.
It was not clear how the two shooting victims were tied to Delaney, and authorities have not publicly identified them. The sheriff’s office has not released a motive for the shooting.
