The conditional pardon, announced by the Prime Minister’s Department legal affairs division after the 64th meeting of the Federal Territories Pardons Board, means Najib, 73, will remain confined to his home rather than Kajang prison for the rest of his sentence.
Under the terms of the pardon, Najib must continue to pay the RM50 million fine imposed for his role in the 1MDB‑related SRC International scandal, a reduction from the original RM210 million penalty.
PAS secretary‑general Takiyuddin Hassan said the party was grateful to the Yang di‑Pertuan Agong for the decision, describing it as “highly meaningful” for Najib’s family and for Malaysians who remember his contributions to development and prosperity, and expressed hope that Najib would stay in good health while serving his sentence at home.
The party added that, despite his incarceration, Najib could still offer ideas, views and experience for the country’s benefit, and urged him to use the opportunity to continue serving Malaysians within the limits of the pardon.
Najib’s legal journey began with a six‑year imprisonment at Kajang prison after the Federal Court dismissed his final appeal in August 2022. In February 2024, the Federal Territories Pardons Board halved his original 12‑year sentence and reduced the fine, paving the way for today’s conditional release.
P. Punithan, president of the Malaysian Indian People’s Party, also thanked the King for the conditional pardon and expressed optimism that Najib would find ways to contribute to the nation under the new conditions.
