The mother, who was found with self‑inflicted wounds after the alleged attack, faces one count of murder for the death of her five‑year‑old son, who died in the vehicle near Springwood, and two counts of intending to murder and causing grievous bodily harm for the injuries sustained by the younger children.
She appeared via video link from her bed at Westmead Hospital, where she remains under police guard, and was denied bail. A further hearing is scheduled for 20 November at Penrith Local Court.
Passing cyclists discovered the scene, administered life‑saving first aid to the two surviving children and called emergency services. Both children were rushed to Westmead Hospital in critical condition and were reported as stable but still serious on Tuesday.
Police are investigating whether a dispute between the children’s parents sparked the attack, though the mother was not previously known to law‑enforcement. The father, who was at work at the time, arrived at the hospital shortly after the incident and is supporting his surviving children.
The case marks the fourth alleged domestic‑violence‑related killing in New South Wales over the weekend, joining a stabbing in Wagga Wagga, a fatal stabbing in Bondi allegedly linked to a weight‑loss drug, and a decapitation in Mole Creek. NSW Police Deputy Commissioner Peter McKenna called the weekend “unprecedented” and urged a whole‑of‑society response, saying more resources are needed across health, education and justice systems to intervene before violence escalates.
