Alodid, who lives on Duncairn Avenue in Belfast, appeared by videolink from Maghaberry Prison. He was formally charged with the attempted murder of Stephen Ogilvie, who on June 8 lost his left eye and suffered deep cuts to his head, face and back, as well as with threatening to kill an NHS radiographer and possession of a knife. When asked if he wished to make a statement, Alodid replied “no.”
The June 8 incident in north Belfast ignited serious disorder in several parts of the region. Police say masked mobs set fire to homes, cars and a bus, targeting individuals on the basis of race, and described the unrest as racially motivated.
The Police Service of Northern Ireland has previously indicated that Alodid may originally be from Chad, though this detail has not been formally confirmed in court documents.
After a brief preliminary inquiry, the presiding magistrate concluded there was a prima facie case to answer and ordered the matter to be transferred to the Crown Court, with a trial date to be set later.
