Mayor V.K. Minimol formally inaugurated the facility, assuring full assistance from the Labour department for its operation and upkeep.
The hub is designed to provide safe rest spaces and essential welfare amenities—such as seating, toilets, Wi‑Fi and charging points—to gig workers employed in online food delivery, e‑commerce and ride‑hailing services.
The Labour department has appointed two staff members for each of the centre’s two daily shifts, which run from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and from 3:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., ensuring round‑the‑clock supervision.
Kochi Corporation’s works standing committee chairperson T.K. Asharaf presided over the ceremony, while Ernakulam Regional Joint Labour Commissioner Suresh Kumar, District Labour Officer (General) Minoy James and District Labour Officer (Enforcement) Jahfar Sadiq were also in attendance.
Officials said the centre aims to improve the working conditions of gig workers by offering a reliable place to rest and recharge, which could help address health and safety concerns associated with long hours and irregular schedules.
