The encounter took place near D.M. Office Road in Amar Colony, where Asif – one of three men alleged to have gang‑raped a 17‑year‑old in Astha Kunj Park on Monday, September 21 – opened fire on a police team that had intercepted him, police said.
According to officials, Asif discharged three rounds, one of which struck a head constable’s bullet‑proof jacket. Police responded with two rounds in self‑defence; one bullet hit Asif in the right leg.
Following the gunfire, the college announced that classes would also be suspended on Wednesday, September 23, with several sessions shifted to an online format. Students, many of whom live in paying‑guest accommodations within a few kilometres of the park, said they were avoiding travelling alone and were forming groups for the commute between the campus, nearby metro stations and their residences.
Anusha Garg, president of the LSR Students’ Union, said that roughly 2,000 to 3,000 women students reside in the area and that several parents have asked their children to return home temporarily. Some students are even considering leaving Delhi for the time being.
The Students’ Union convened an emergency online general‑body meeting on Tuesday night to voice safety concerns and demand stronger security measures around the college perimeter.
