The latest edition of football’s premier competition began with an unprecedented 48 teams, the largest roster in World Cup history, marking a significant expansion from previous tournaments.
The opening round featured twelve groups of four teams each, playing a total of 72 matches. Those games reduced the field to 32 qualifiers, setting the stage for the knockout rounds.
