The new feature, unveiled during a company briefing, adds a Work tab to the mobile interface, enabling paid subscribers to create documents, compose emails, generate presentations, build websites and even access finance‑related functions in ChatGPT, all through spoken commands.
Free and Go tier users will not be left out; they will receive access to the same voice interface for interacting with plugins and connected apps, though the broader suite of workflow tools remains limited to the higher‑paid plans.
OpenAI said the voice conversations will now produce richer text output, and users can seamlessly toggle between voice and text input. The company also highlighted cross‑device continuity, allowing a conversation started on a phone to be resumed on a desktop without loss of context.
The rollout follows OpenAI’s July launch of the GPT‑Live conversational model and its integration into the desktop app’s Work and Codex tabs, where users could already use voice to complete tasks or build applications. The mobile update mirrors those capabilities, reflecting a growing trend of users preferring voice commands for complex AI‑driven tasks.
Competitor Anthropic recently simplified its own mobile‑desktop handoff and merged its Cowork and Chat interfaces, but OpenAI has chosen to keep its chat and workspace functions separate, focusing on expanding the agentic feature set within each environment.
