Speaking to reporters in Kerala, Vadra described the wave of crimes as “horrible” and warned that the safety of women on public streets was deteriorating, making it harder for any government scheme to succeed if basic security is lacking.
She highlighted a string of incidents in the national capital over the past two weeks: a 16‑year‑old girl was gang‑raped and killed in Swaroop Nagar on September 10; a minor was sexually assaulted in a Sadar Bazar shop on September 16 while buying stationery; and on September 21, a six‑year‑old girl and a 17‑year‑old girl were assaulted in separate attacks.
Vadra also referenced a harassment case from Bihar’s Jamui area, where a girl and a boy were accosted by men on the roadside while returning home, underscoring that the problem extends beyond Delhi.
The Congress MP, who is on a multi‑day visit to her home state of Kerala, called on both state and central authorities to devise concrete measures that would make streets safer for women, urging a shift from rhetoric to actionable policies.
She added that her itinerary in Kerala includes meeting a broad cross‑section of citizens to better understand local concerns, with the aim of translating those insights into political action on women’s safety.
