Babel, who played alongside Alonso at Liverpool, said the timing of the former midfielder’s move to Chelsea was not right for a return to the Merseyside club, but he believes “the story is eventually meant to include another affiliation with Liverpool.”
He noted that Liverpool chose not to pursue Alonso last season while the club dismissed Arne Slot and appointed Andoni Iraola as manager, a decision made after Chelsea had already secured Alonso’s services.
Chelsea’s appointment of Alonso came swiftly after they replaced Liam Rosenior, who left the club after less than four months of a six‑year contract at Stamford Bridge.
Speaking on behalf of ticket platform SeatPick, Babel added that he wishes Alonso well at Chelsea but looks forward to the day the “chapter” ends, especially when the Spaniard faces Liverpool in competition.
Babel also speculated that Steven Gerrard could eventually be appointed Liverpool manager, describing such a scenario as “an amazing story for the club” if it ever materialises.
