Rain began falling around 9 a.m. on Wednesday across Vijayawada, with the city’s eastern, western, central and northern zones each recording between 23.4 mm and 27.4 mm of rainfall by 6 p.m., according to district authorities.
The surrounding NTR district also saw light to moderate precipitation, but some locations experienced significantly higher totals: Tiruvuru logged the highest at 97.2 mm, followed by Reddigudem with 59.4 mm, Vissannapeta at 55.8 mm, and G. Konduru at 35.2 mm.
Overall, the district accumulated 570.2 mm of rain during the period, while several other areas recorded less than 20 mm.
In response, NTR District Collector G. Lakshmisha carried out a surprise inspection of the district’s emergency control room at the Collectorate, reviewing staff performance and directing officials to stay alert and promptly forward public complaints. A dedicated helpline, 9154970454, was publicised for assistance.
Vijayawada Municipal Corporation Commissioner Dhyanachandra H.M. inspected old and dilapidated structures across the city, urging occupants of unsafe buildings to relocate immediately and emphasizing that public safety would be the highest priority for municipal officials.
The district remains under a yellow alert for Thursday, with meteorological services warning of isolated moderate to heavy rainfall that could exacerbate flooding risks.
