Andhra Pradesh Water Resources Minister Nimmala Ramanaidu has ordered irrigation officials to prepare for possible flooding after heavy rain in several parts of the state. Officials were told to monitor forecasts from the India Meteorological Department and adjust flood-control operations in advance.
The department is tracking inflows into reservoirs, rivers and streams. Pumps at Pattiseema and Purushothapatnam are to be operated according to inflows and rainfall in their catchment areas.
Inflows into the Yeleru reservoir are forecast to rise from below 2,000 cusecs to about 27,000 cusecs around September 25. Officials are also monitoring the Vamsadhara, Nagavali, Bahuda and Mahendratanaya rivers.
Srikakulam district authorities have issued the first flood warning for the Vamsadhara and Nagavali. A departmental war room will maintain continuous monitoring and alert people in vulnerable areas if conditions worsen.
