Odisha authorities evacuated residents from low-lying and landslide-prone areas as heavy rain from a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal caused disruption across parts of the state, officials said. The system crossed the Andhra Pradesh coast near Kalingapatnam, in Srikakulam district, on Thursday.
The rain brought reports of landslides, waterlogging, uprooted trees and damage to houses. In several areas, water flowing across roads disrupted communications, according to the account. It gave no evacuation total or state-wide damage estimate.
The India Meteorological Department forecast squally conditions along the coast, with wind gusts of up to 70 kilometres per hour. It advised fishermen not to go to sea until Friday morning, September 25, 2026.
