The new provision applies to eligible laden export-import containers moving through mainline vessel services at V. O. Chidambaranar Port in Thoothukudi. The port authority said the measure is intended to facilitate container traffic and make handling and storage more convenient for shipping and logistics operators.
To accommodate the cargo, the port has earmarked approximately 40,000 square metres of additional area. About 20,000 square metres are near the seventh berth, with another 20,000 square metres close to the tenth berth. The expanded space is intended to support the stacking requirements associated with container traffic on mainline services.
Eligible containers will receive ten days of storage without charge. Fees will apply after that period under the port authority’s prevailing Scale of Rates. Access is subject to port regulations and is available to mainline vessel operators, terminal operators, major industries, freight forwarders, customs brokers, non-vessel-operating common carriers and other eligible stakeholders.
The policy combines a longer free-storage window with additional ground capacity. For companies arranging exports and imports through the port, the extra time may make it easier to coordinate cargo movements with vessel schedules. The authority presented the measure as part of its effort to promote container traffic through VOC Port; the notice does not specify a separate end date for the facility.
