Magyar spoke in Szolnok during the third leg of his national tour. He said the measure would be stricter than the government’s initial pledge and that Finance Minister Andras Karman would soon announce details. The wealth tax was one of the Tisza Party’s most popular promises; Magyar said it also had support among Fidesz voters.
In the same speech, Magyar asked Tisza’s parliamentary group to vote unanimously to lift his parliamentary immunity. The request was made by Hungary’s acting prosecutor general in connection with an investigation into an alleged 2024 theft. Magyar is accused of taking a phone from a man who was filming him at a club and throwing it into the Danube. The allegation has not been established as a court finding.
Magyar called the investigation a disgrace and said he had nothing to hide. He said he would act the same way again to protect friends and young people from harassment by what he described as a paid provocateur. Last year, the European Parliament declined to lift his immunity as an MEP.
