Caleb Flynn, now 40, is on trial accused of murdering his wife Ashley. In 2013, he spoke warmly about her while auditioning for American Idol. Prosecutors now allege that he killed her and tried to make the scene look like a break-in.
Flynn called emergency services and said an intruder had entered the home and shot Ashley. The couple’s daughters, now 10 and 12, were at home, CNN reported. Prosecutors say the intruder story was fabricated. The defense disputes the case: Flynn’s lawyer acknowledged hurtful messages to his lover but argued that infidelity and texts do not prove murder. The weapon has not been found.
Jurors have heard about roughly 107,000 messages exchanged over about 18 months, from 2024 to early 2026, between Flynn and 24-year-old Alleigha Botner. Prosecutors say some messages discussed Ashley’s death. Botner testified that she regretted her own messages about killing Ashley and did not mean them. The two met through church, where they sang together; Flynn later used artificial intelligence to make love songs for her. Two songs were played for the jury.
Prosecutors describe the affair as a central motive and also point to a possible financial incentive. Flynn worked at his father-in-law’s business and earned about $200,000 a year, according to Ashley’s sister; prosecutors argue a divorce could have put that job at risk. Botner testified that the relationship was under strain before Ashley’s death: she had set several deadlines for Flynn to leave his wife and said shortly before the killing that they were no longer together.
The jury must weigh the messages and testimony alongside the defense’s arguments. The trial is scheduled for about two weeks, though the judge said it could last as long as three. The allegations remain for the court and jury to decide.
