A Lufthansa flight from Frankfurt to Toronto carrying 371 passengers diverted for safety reasons after an odour was noticed in the cabin. The aircraft turned back over Scotland and landed in Manchester. The airline has not identified the source of the smell; the aircraft is being inspected.
The crew declared an emergency to secure priority landing. Because the Boeing 747-400 landed heavier than usual with fuel still on board, airport firefighters carried out a precautionary inspection. Passengers were able to leave the aircraft normally. The airline’s account reported no injuries.
Passengers were to spend the night in hotels and continue to Toronto on a replacement flight on Sunday. A Lufthansa spokesperson apologised for the disruption and said the safety of passengers and crew remained the company’s highest priority.
