Malaysia’s Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail and Bahrain’s Interior Minister, General Shaikh Rashid Abdulla Al Khalifa, held bilateral talks in Abu Dhabi. They discussed expanding cooperation on counter-terrorism and counter-extremism, intelligence sharing, law enforcement and drug detection, as well as border management and security to address cross-border threats.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 15th United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice. Saifuddin described it as an opportunity to strengthen relations based on shared values, mutual respect and a commitment to peace. He also said Malaysia values Bahrain as a partner in maintaining public order and international security.
The ministers discussed preparations for the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix, which the report says is scheduled at the Sepang International Circuit from October 2 to 4, 2026. About 700 security and traffic-management personnel are expected to be deployed during the event.
Dedicated immigration lanes at airports are planned for team crews and accredited personnel, while visa arrangements for foreign visitors are to be facilitated. Saifuddin said the measures are intended to ensure a safe and smooth event for participants, officials and visitors. He added that a major motorsport event can strengthen ties between the people of Malaysia and Bahrain.
The sides also briefly reviewed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation to prevent and combat transnational crime. It is still going through processes between the two countries. Saifuddin said he hoped discussions would continue at the technical level and produce concrete security outcomes.
