Malaysia and Russia are expanding cooperation across strategic sectors, with bilateral ties reaching what Malaysian ambassador Datuk Cheong Loon Lai described as a “very high level.” He pointed to a series of senior-level exchanges since 2024, including visits by Malaysia’s King Sultan Ibrahim and Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
The partnership spans energy security, artificial intelligence, quantum technology, news agencies, disaster management, education and aerospace. Cheong said Malaysia continues to benefit from Russia’s experience and capabilities in these fields.
Economic links have also proved resilient. Bilateral trade exceeded US$3.6 billion in 2025 despite geoeconomic challenges, according to Cheong. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko, who attended a recent Malaysian National Day reception in Moscow as guest of honour, likewise highlighted the strength of the relationship and the high level of trust between the countries.
Rudenko cited Sultan Ibrahim’s use of a Russian-made Aurus during Malaysia’s National Day celebrations as a reflection of close ties and mutual confidence. The embassy reception, marking Malaysia’s 69th National Day and themed “Malaysia MADANI: Shared Prosperity,” brought together more than 300 diplomats, Russian officials, business leaders and friends of Malaysia. Malaysian dishes including nasi lemak, satay and rendang were served.
