The Metropolitan Police have reopened a line of inquiry into the unsolved murder of BBC presenter Jill Dando by re-examining CCTV recorded at Putney Bridge station. The footage was captured on the night of the killing in April 1999, about a mile from Dando’s home in Fulham, west London.
The video shows an unidentified man, referred to in reports as “Man X”, walking along a route investigators believe may have been used to leave the area about 20 minutes after the shooting. Cold-case officers have spent the past ten months locating and digitising the original recording. Police say advances in CCTV enhancement now give them an opportunity to examine it again; the review is ongoing.
Dando, 37, was shot outside her home and her killer has never been identified. The case has undergone numerous reviews. Police have not announced that the newly examined footage identifies a suspect or establishes a motive.
Barry George was convicted in 2001, but the conviction was quashed by the Court of Appeal in November 2007. A jury cleared him at a retrial in August 2008. The renewed CCTV work is intended to determine whether the improved images can provide a new lead in the investigation.
