The draw left THW Kiel players and management frustrated and seeking an explanation. Germany international Julian Köster scored in the final action, apparently giving Kiel a 32–31 win. The referees reviewed the video for several minutes before ruling out the goal because Makuc had committed a travelling violation before the shot.
THW centre-back Hendrik Pekeler accepted that Makuc had taken steps but questioned why the officials had gone to video review and asked what had prompted them to do so. Club chief executive Viktor Szilagyi also described the decision as surprising and said he wanted an explanation for why the referees went back to earlier moments in the sequence.
SG Flensburg-Handewitt backcourt player Simon Pytlick called the decision harsh and said he understood Kiel’s frustration and the crowd’s reaction. He said the technical error was visible, but steps occur frequently during matches, leaving him unsure whether the call was right for the sport.
The draw kept Flensburg top of the table on goal difference. Both teams had identical 11:1 records at the time.
