Munich defeated the Cologne–Rhine-Ruhr bid in a vote at the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) membership assembly. Selection as Germany's candidate does not award Munich the Games: it must now compete internationally.
Brandenburg Sports Minister Gordon Hoffmann of the Christian Democratic Union congratulated Munich on Instagram. Despite Berlin withdrawing its own bid, he welcomed Germany's candidacy and expressed confidence about bringing the Olympic and Paralympic Games to the country.
Berlin withdrew two days before the vote. Its proposal performed worse than its rivals in the evaluation, while supporters of the bid in the city senate lost out in the House of Representatives election.
The Berlin+ plan would have brought the capital together with Brandenburg, Saxony and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Like Munich's candidacy, it envisaged hosting in 2036, 2040 or 2044.
