A powerful nor’easter swept across the northeastern United States, bringing dangerous coastal flooding, strong winds and heavy rain. The National Weather Service said the storm affected areas including New York City and Boston. New York and New Jersey declared emergencies after coastal flooding, while rain and strong winds were forecast from Virginia to Maine.
A man in Brooklyn died after a tree fell on him in the strong winds. More than 160,000 households in the Northeast were without electricity, according to outage tracker PowerOutage. By Saturday, FlightAware data showed more than 2,400 delayed flights and another 1,199 cancellations.
High tides coinciding with a full moon were expected to worsen coastal flooding. Roads and homes in the New Jersey communities of Surf City and Manasquan were reported inundated. The National Weather Service urged people in low-lying coastal areas to prepare for major flooding that could submerge roads and affect homes and businesses.
New York officials warned that wind gusts could reach 86 kilometers per hour over the weekend, potentially bringing down more trees and power lines. Mayor Zohran Mamdani advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel and not to walk or drive through floodwater.
The storm also forced event cancellations. A professional soccer match between Red Bull New York and St. Louis City SC was called off. Organizers canceled the Global Citizen Festival in Central Park, which had been scheduled to feature Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean and John Legend, as well as British singer Ed Sheeran’s concert at Gillette Stadium near Boston.
