Officers were called at about 7:21 a.m. Sunday. CBS Detroit, citing The Detroit News, reported that the shooting took place near Eaton Avenue and Prest Street on the city’s west side. Responding officers found three men with fatal gunshot wounds.
Four other people—two men and two women—were taken to a hospital privately. Their injuries were not life-threatening. The victims’ ages had not been released; Police Chief Todd Bettison said the three men who died were approximately 30 or older.
Investigators believe the shooting stemmed from a fight. Bettison said he did not view the incident as an ongoing danger to the public or neighborhood. Police had leads and were working to identify those responsible; it was not immediately known whether anyone had been arrested.
The address had previously drawn police attention: Bettison said the department had received seven calls there this year. Detroit Mayor Mary Sheffield said the city’s Office of Neighborhood and Community Safety would provide broad support to affected residents and families.
