The first attack took place on Saturday night at a tavern in Wedela, southwest of Johannesburg. Police said eight armed men opened fire on customers outside and inside the venue. Seventeen people were killed — 13 men and four women — and at least 15 were injured. Investigators believe the attackers may have used AK-47 rifles and pistols.
Police said the suspects searched some patrons and took their mobile phones before fleeing in two vehicles; two other vehicles were set alight at the scene. About four hours later, another shooting occurred at a crowded entertainment venue in Lwandle, near Cape Town. Ten people were killed and 11 injured. Five victims died at the scene, while five others died during medical treatment after being taken to hospital.
No arrests had been announced in either case. Police deployed specialist units and investigators to find the suspects. The motives remain under investigation. In the Wedela case, police have not ruled out a territorial dispute linked to illegal gold mining.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa condemned the attacks and said authorities would intensify efforts against violent crime. The shootings came days after an attack in KwaMakhutha, near Durban, killed at least 11 people, including a pregnant woman. The latest incidents have added to concerns over armed violence in the country.
