Vucic resigns as Serbia’s president to pursue a return as prime minister

Speaking to reporters in Belgrade, Vucic thanked citizens who had entrusted him with the presidency twice and said, “Today I am resigning.” He previously served as Serbia’s prime minister from 2014 to 2017 before becoming president.

His current presidential term was his second and, under the constitution, final term. The Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), which Vucic co-founded and officially led for many years, had already named him its candidate for prime minister.

The parliamentary election is set for Oct. 25. If his party wins, Vucic could return to the premiership he held before taking the presidency.
