The attack took place early on September 19 at a rural home in northern California. Jeff Wilson had let his French bulldog, Cassie, outside. When he later called her back into the house, a bear attacked him. The report describes it as a cinnamon-colored subspecies of American black bear found in that part of the United States.
Local media reported that the animal struck Jeff against a wall, breaking two of his ribs. He also suffered numerous lacerations and bite wounds. His wife, Mallory Wilson, ran outside after hearing alarming sounds and found her husband bloodied on the ground, with the bear holding Cassie in its mouth.
The Guardian reported that Cassie had first stood up for Jeff. Mallory grabbed a piece of patio furniture and struck at the bear in an attempt to save both her husband and the dog. The animal also attacked her, knocking her down and injuring her around the head and neck before fleeing.
Cassie died two days after the attack from her injuries. Jeff and Mallory run a small hospitality business and have lived close to nature for years. Friends organised an online fundraiser to help pay for the couple’s treatment. Jeff suffered broken ribs and multiple wounds; Mallory needed further care for injuries to her head and face, as well as other lacerations and puncture wounds.
RMF24 reported the incident amid a rise in bear encounters in the western United States. Authorities have urged residents in affected areas to secure rubbish bins, avoid leaving food scraps outdoors and supervise pets, particularly after dark.
