On Thursday, September 24, 2026, Moldova detected four drone overflights. Two drones exploded on Moldovan territory, and remains of a third were found separately. Authorities temporarily closed airspace in the north of the country following the incidents.
Romania said two drones had violated its airspace. One exploded near Solca, about 30 kilometres west of Suceava. A nearby border crossing with Ukraine was temporarily closed amid the attack. Earlier, NATO fighter jets had been scrambled after a Russian strike near the Danube Delta.
NATO fighter jets in Poland took off twice following a major Russian attack near the border. Two Polish crossing points on the Ukrainian border were also evacuated during a drone attack. Late on the night of September 23, a fire broke out at a ground-based Starlink station near Wola Krobowska, about 40 kilometres south of Warsaw. The site is owned by state telecommunications company Exatel and carries internet traffic in Poland and to Ukraine.
Polish authorities are treating the fire as possible sabotage, but no party’s involvement has been established. Prime Minister Donald Tusk said Russia was refining “vile forms of pressure” and suggested the incident could be part of hybrid activity aimed at disrupting Ukraine’s military internet connectivity. This is the Polish prime minister’s assessment, not a confirmed finding of the investigation.
Moldovan President Maia Sandu said a large-scale Russian attack on Ukraine had again reached Moldova and threatened Europe. Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu said Chisinau was discussing stronger air defence with Romania and Ukraine: Moldova can monitor its airspace but has very limited ability to intercept drones. Romanian President Dan also voiced support for Ukraine and cited repeated incursions into Romanian airspace.
Separately, Spain’s El Mundo newspaper, citing a CIA report, reported that Russia may be preparing drone attacks against Italy, France and Spain using commercial vessels from the so-called shadow fleet in the Mediterranean. The information has not been officially confirmed.
