Remco Evenepoel’s Montreal world-championship road race did not go to plan. The Belgian began as one of the leading favourites but appeared depleted during a chaotic event and repeatedly struggled to follow strong groups. He managed to rejoin the race several times at his own pace, but finished 12th.
After the race, commissaires from the International Cycling Union (UCI) fined Evenepoel 500 Swiss francs and deducted 25 UCI points for discarding waste outside designated litter zones.
The jury report also lists penalties for Eritrean riders Biniam Girmay and Henok Mulubrhan, each fined 500 francs for wearing club-team clothing instead of national-team kit. Guatemala’s Manuel Rodas received the same fine for an illegal riding position, the same type of offence for which newly crowned world champion Demi Vollering was penalized the previous day. Vollering was fined and lost UCI points but was allowed to keep her rainbow jersey.
Eritrea team sports director Samson Ghebregyesus was fined 1,000 francs over the riders’ clothing violation. Swiss team sports director Patrick Müllher received a 500-franc fine after an unidentified Swiss rider discarded waste outside the designated area.
Evenepoel was the most prominent name among those sanctioned, but he was not the only one. The UCI report lists penalties for violations involving kit, riding position and waste disposal.
