US House Speaker Mike Johnson said in an interview with Fox Business Network that the country does not need a moratorium on artificial-intelligence development. He argued that heavy intervention could leave the United States behind China in the technology race.
Johnson said innovation should continue, while policymakers seek an appropriate balance between technological progress and oversight. He said he would join President Donald Trump’s meeting with executives from major AI companies, scheduled for the day after the source report was published.
The meeting is expected to focus on finding that balance. Some leading companies in the sector have called for the pace of AI development to slow, warning of potential risks to humanity and urging governments to work together on ways to oversee the technology.
According to the report, Trump has played down concerns that AI could harm humanity and insists the United States should preserve its lead over China. He has also said safeguards are already in place, including measures within the Justice Department.
Trump had dinner on Sunday with Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei. Amodei has called for slower AI development, as have other companies in the field, including OpenAI, Google’s DeepMind, Microsoft and xAI.
