The shooting happened Monday in Warren County, Kentucky, while Phillips was patrolling I-65 near mile marker 38. State officials described it as a severe attack but have released no further details about the incident.
Authorities identified a bluish-gray 2025 Honda Civic with temporary tag TN018596 as a possible suspect vehicle. It was last seen heading north on I-65 near mile marker 75.
A public safety alert from the Kentucky Emergency Management Association said the suspect should be considered armed and dangerous. Officials warned people not to approach and to call 911 if they see the person or vehicle.
Kentucky State Police identified the trooper as Hayden Phillips. Col. Phillip Burnett Jr. said the agency was facing one of its most difficult moments and that Phillips’ dedication to duty and the commonwealth would not be forgotten. The search is ongoing.
