PASOK MEP and European Parliament Budget Committee member Nikolas Farantouris has sent a written question to the European Commission about the risk of EU funding losses in Greek agriculture. The move follows a Commission report identifying serious weaknesses in Greece’s system for awarding farm support and warning of possible suspension or loss of European funds.
Politico has also reported that the Commission’s Directorate-General for Agriculture and Rural Development (DG AGRI) rejected a Greek government proposal to correct the subsidy system. According to the report, the directorate said the proposal did not ensure adequate basic verification or compliance with EU rules. DG AGRI is reported to have asked Athens to revise the framework and noted that the Commission could adopt implementing acts to suspend payments or exclude support.
Farantouris asks the Commission to specify the shortcomings in the government plan and the measures Greece must take. He also asks whether the transfer of OPEKEPE, the organisation responsible for agricultural subsidy payments, into the Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE) from Jan. 1, 2026, is working effectively, and whether there is a risk of suspension or loss of funds and a deadline for addressing the issues.
Any cuts or suspension could affect thousands of lawful beneficiaries and involve funding from the European Agricultural Guarantee Fund and the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development. Farantouris said farmers and producers should not bear the consequences of weaknesses in Greece’s management and control system and called for clear answers, better administration and restored confidence in EU institutions.
