Greek President Constantine Tassoulas sent wishes for peace and prosperity to Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides for the 66th anniversary of the Republic of Cyprus, marked on Oct. 1, 2026.
Tassoulas said that despite the effects of the Turkish invasion, territorial loss and 52 years of continuing occupation, Cyprus has become a prosperous EU state and a pillar of peace and stability in the eastern Mediterranean.
He described Cyprus's presidency of the Council of the EU in the first half of 2026 as successful despite regional geopolitical instability. He said the upcoming fourth Greece-Cyprus intergovernmental summit should strengthen cooperation between the two countries.
Tassoulas reaffirmed Greece's support for reunification through a fair, sustainable and comprehensive settlement consistent with relevant UN Security Council resolutions, international law and EU principles. Athens also backs efforts to restart talks aimed at removing occupying troops and ending the outdated guarantees system.
