South Korea’s finance minister puts inflation fight at top of agenda

South Korean Finance Minister Lee Hyoung-il pledged to focus economic policy on stabilising prices and restoring growth.

South Korean Finance Minister Lee Hyoung-il said his ministry would focus on curbing inflation and supporting an economic recovery. He made the remarks on Tuesday, October 6 during his first parliamentary audit since taking office last month.

Lee said the government would seek to keep consumer prices stable, with particular attention to fuel and food costs. Authorities would also respond to irregular pricing practices and expand financial support for vulnerable groups.

Other priorities include housing affordability, employment and services for low-income residents. The government is also advancing 3 major projects in semiconductors and artificial intelligence intended to support growth.

Asked about an agreement linked to investment in the United States and lower tariffs, Lee said Seoul would assess projects for commercial viability and their alignment with the country’s strategic interests.

Lee also cited external risks, including the war in the Middle East and monetary-policy decisions by major central banks. The ministry is preparing a roadmap to move the won from a regulated system toward free convertibility and to lower barriers for foreign investors.
