Four arrested in Coimbatore over alleged dating-app extortion

Police say the men lured a 36-year-old local resident to a meeting, assaulted him and forced him to transfer 99,000 rupees.

Police in Coimbatore, in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, have arrested four men suspected of extorting 99,000 rupees from a local resident. Investigators say the complainant was lured to a meeting through a dating app and then forced to transfer the money through UPI.

The Hindu reported that the 36-year-old resident of Kalveerampalayam had met K. Kaviyarasan, 22, through the app. Kaviyarasan allegedly invited him to V.N.R. Nagar, near Vadavalli, on the afternoon of 1 October. The complainant told police that three other men were waiting there.

Police say the four men threatened and assaulted him before forcing him to unlock his phone and send 99,000 rupees through a payment app. The arrested men were identified as Kaviyarasan, R. Vinoth Kumar, 32, R. Mugeshkumar, 20, and M. Muthukumar, 23. The first three are from Sivaganga district, while Muthukumar is from Ramanathapuram district.

Police registered a case after the complaint and arrested all four on 3 October. Investigators are also examining information that the suspects may have targeted other people using the same method. The allegations are under investigation.
