Paris plans to deploy 2,000 police officers and gendarmes to oversee a march.
France is preparing for a new phase of student protests, with education unions expected to join demonstrations. Authorities hope union involvement will help organise the marches, but remain concerned about possible disorder.
The Interior Ministry says 6,059 people have been arrested since Sept. 28. More than 5,000, mostly minors, were taken into custody. The national police inspectorate has opened ten investigations linked to the movement.
In Paris, 2,000 police officers and gendarmes are due to oversee a march expected to draw between 20,000 and 40,000 people. Police are also monitoring other cities, where fewer officers will be available to manage demonstrations.
Authorities expect students, parents and teachers to take part, alongside several activist groups. The Interior Ministry is considering two possible outcomes: the protests could lose momentum with union involvement, or the movement could escalate.
