German tourist remains hospitalized after Lake Garda campsite fire

The blaze destroyed 30 mobile homes. Six people treated for smoke inhalation have been discharged.

A German tourist remains in hospital with third-degree burns after a fire at the Bella Italia campsite on Lake Garda. Police said the injuries were not life-threatening. Six others, including a Swiss family with three children, were treated for smoke inhalation and have since been discharged. A campsite security worker was also affected.

The fire broke out before dawn on Sunday in Peschiera del Garda, on the lake’s southern shore. Exploding gas cylinders complicated firefighting, but crews brought the blaze under control quickly. Witnesses said a loud bang woke them. Police do not suspect arson, although the cause of the campsite fire is still being investigated.

The fire destroyed 30 mobile homes. Other units and several cars were also reported to have been damaged. The cost of the damage has not yet been estimated.

Bella Italia is one of the largest campsites on Lake Garda, with an estimated capacity of about 7,500 people. Peschiera del Garda mayor Orietta Gaiulli told Ansa that the site’s fire-safety system was renewed last summer. She said emergency crews had acted quickly and prevented more serious consequences.
