Madrid's High Court has asked the central government's representative to respond before it continues considering the regional government's demand to dismantle a housing-rights protest camp.
Madrid's High Court (TSJM) declined to order the central government's representative to immediately remove a tent camp at Puerta del Sol. The urgent request came from the regional government led by Isabel Díaz Ayuso. The court said the state's General Administration must first be heard before a demolition order can be made with proper procedural safeguards.
The central government's representative in Madrid has until Wednesday morning to submit objections. The court can then continue examining the regional authorities' request. The decision does not amount to a final rejection of the case over the camp.
The camp became a focal point of protests over Madrid's housing crisis after the eviction of 87-year-old Maricarmen Abascal. Demonstrators set up tents at Puerta del Sol after one of the protests. Separately, Spain's Congress of Deputies rejected two government-approved decrees on Oct. 2.
