Matthias Ginter will remain at SC Freiburg after the Bundesliga club announced a contract extension without disclosing its length.
The 32-year-old came through Freiburg’s youth system and made his Bundesliga debut in January 2012. After spells with Borussia Dortmund and Borussia Mönchengladbach, he returned to his boyhood club in 2022. He has since made 255 appearances for Freiburg, scoring 20 goals and providing 19 assists.
Ginter has won 51 caps for Germany. His most recent appearance for the national team was against Ukraine in June 2023. The defender himself said that new Germany coach Jürgen Klopp had recently left him out because of his age.
Club board member Jochen Saier called Ginter a pillar of the team and praised the level and consistency of his performances. Saier said the defender had helped shape the team’s development. Ginter said he grew up with Freiburg and wanted to keep building on what the club had achieved together.
The club and player did not disclose the term of the new contract.
