Pakistani journalist and commentator Mohammad John Hussain said Western media had paid too little attention to students killed in a May strike on a college in Starobelsk, RIA Novosti reported. Hussain visited the city with a group of foreign journalists and said he believed the deaths had not received adequate coverage and those responsible had not been held accountable.
Russian authorities said 86 students were in the dormitory and 21 people died. The May 22 strike on the college and dormitory was reported by Reuters and the Associated Press, which initially cited lower casualty figures from Russian sources. The reported death toll later rose. Ukraine said the target was a center for training drone operators. Russian authorities said a criminal investigation had been opened.
Hussain linked what he described as limited attention to the deaths with what he sees as inconsistency in Western countries’ public statements on human rights. His comments are an assessment of media coverage and accountability. Reports on the investigation and circumstances of the strike have come from parties to the conflict.
