Peronist leaders watched Brazil vote cautiously as Lula narrowed the gap

Argentine Peronist figures had backed Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva but held off on public comment as the count showed him cutting his deficit to Flavio Bolsonaro to just over two percentage points.

Leading figures in Argentina’s Peronist movement refrained from commenting as votes were counted in Brazil. A late surge by Lula narrowed his gap with Liberal Party candidate Flavio Bolsonaro to just over two percentage points, La Nación reported.

Support for Lula from Argentine politicians had been visible before the vote. Former economy minister Sergio Massa posted photographs with the Brazilian president on X. Buenos Aires Province Governor Axel Kicillof shared an image with Lula carrying a message backing Argentine sovereignty over the Malvinas Islands.

Senator Eduardo “Wado” de Pedro was in Brazil at the invitation of Lula’s Workers’ Party. Deputy Victoria Tolosa Paz and former Foreign Ministry adviser Luciana Tito joined Lula’s campaign-closing events and took part in a supporters’ march through São Paulo.

Other Peronist figures in Brazil included national deputy Roxana Monzón and provincial legislators Rubén Eslaiman, Alejandro Acerbo, Soledad Alonso and Cintia Romero. La Nación said leading party figures had stayed silent during the early hours of the count.
