Brazil's first-round gubernatorial elections on Sunday, October 4, produced 20 winners. The Liberal Party (PL) won five governorships, followed by the Social Democratic Party (PSD) with four. Seven states and the Federal District will hold runoffs on October 25.
The Workers' Party (PT) and Republicanos won three governorships each. The Progressives (PP) took two, while MDB, PSDB and Podemos each won one. PL's five victories came in the three southern states of Paraná, Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina, as well as Rondônia and Roraima.
Runoffs will be held in Acre, Amazonas, Tocantins, Rio Grande do Norte, the Federal District, Espírito Santo and Rio de Janeiro. PL and PSD will face each other in Amazonas and Rio de Janeiro. PT will contest Rio Grande do Norte against União Brasil and the Federal District against PP.
