Rodnina cautions against reading bias into Batumi skating scores

Three-time Olympic champion Irina Rodnina commented on the marks given to Russian skaters at a Challenger event in Georgia, saying statistics alone do not establish unfair judging.

Irina Rodnina said the relatively low marks received by Russian pair skaters Anastasia Mishina and Aleksandr Galliamov in Batumi do not, by themselves, prove that they were judged unfairly. The three-time Olympic champion argued that comparing the scores with the pair’s best results from recent years is misleading because they had not competed internationally during that period.

A Georgian pair won the event. Rodnina acknowledged the familiar advantage of competing at home but said that was no reason for Russian athletes to complain. Her remarks came amid questions from some experts about the objectivity of the judging in Batumi.

In comments carried by Sport24, Rodnina did not identify a specific judging decision that she believed warranted review.
