Romania’s team has won three gold and two silver medals at the 2026 International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics. The Hanoi competition has 315 students from 64 countries, the Romanian Education Ministry said.

Silver medallists were Vlad Toncu of Bucharest’s Tudor Vianu National College of Computer Science and Vlad-Tudor Bolohan of the International Computer Science High School.
The 19th edition of the olympiad is being held in Hanoi from September 25 to October 5. According to the ministry, contestants face five rounds: theoretical, practical telescope observation, planetarium, data analysis and team competition.
Romania’s team was selected and prepared in Suceava with support from Ștefan cel Mare University, the Suceava County School Inspectorate, the CYGNUS Scientific Society and Suceava Sports High School. The scientific coordinators were Petru Crăciun and Cristian Pîrghie. The ministry said it supports national teams by covering entry and travel costs and organising qualifying stages.
