Most socialist officials consulted favour a November 29 vote after Congress rejected two government housing decrees, El País reported.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez is expected to announce on October 5 whether he will call an early general election. El País, cited by ANSA, reported that most of the Socialist Party officials and ministers consulted favour holding the vote on November 29, the earliest available date.

The consultations followed the government’s defeat in Congress, where two housing decrees were rejected with votes from the People’s Party, Vox and seven Junts per Catalunya lawmakers. PSOE figures believe nationwide housing protests could turn the parliamentary setback into an electoral opportunity and put the opposition parties under pressure. One minister said the defeat makes it difficult to explain how the government can continue and warned budget negotiations could fail.

Other considerations include divisions on the left, with Sumar and Podemos still split, and the risk that protests could lose momentum during a 54-day campaign. Some socialists and government members would prefer to adopt new housing decrees and gain time. Sánchez is continuing consultations but has not shared his position.
